Why upgrade your Heating?
There are many reasons someone might choose to upgrade their heating source. Some of the main reasons include having a breaking or broken heater, wanting to save money on their utility bills, wanting a more even temperature in their home, wanting a more quiet heater, converting their fuel source to something more efficient, to increase the value of their home, or to gain the peace of mind that comes with having a heater covered by a warranty.
Types of Heaters:
These are by far the most common source of heating in most homes. You can get a heater that uses electricity, natural gas, or propane as its fuel source. Furnaces come in a variety of different heat output capacities from many different brands. They also have a range of different features such as different fan speeds and fuel burning rates as well as efficiency differences. Furnaces heat your home by delivering the heat to every room evenly from a single source via ductwork.
Heat Pumps –
A heat pump is nothing more than an air conditioner that can flow its refrigerant in reverse. This allows it to pull heat from the outdoors and use and indoor fan to distribute it evenly throughout the home via ductwork. Heat pumps are all electric appliances but use refrigerant to move heat between the indoors and outdoors. They come in a variety of different brands, heating/ cooling capacities, and feature levels. Features can include having the ability to adjust their refrigerant flow to match demand and higher efficiency ratings.
Ductless Heat Pumps –
These appliances are set up move heat the same way as a traditional heat pump. There is an indoor and outdoor unit that are connected with refrigerant pipes and communication wires. The main difference between a traditional heat pump and a ductless unit it that the ductless unit (you guessed it) has no ductwork. The indoor unit is typically mounted on a wall and distributes its heat directly into the room it is installed in. Multiple indoor units can be connected to one outdoor unit to get a better distribution of air.
Stoves and Fireplaces –
Wood, pellets, natural gas, or propane can be used for the fuel source on a stove or fireplace. These appliances typically sacrifice efficiency in favor of beauty. While a stove or fireplace is typically not recommended as a primary heating source, they can provide an inviting atmosphere and an additional level of control to specific rooms as a supplementary heat source.
Which is best for you?
As you can see there are a few different styles of heaters available and each comes in a range of different heating capacities and feature ranges. There are also many different brands available for each. When shopping for a new heater, things can quickly become overwhelming.
